I’m at SAPPHIRE/SAPTechEd Madrid and for the first time in a while, SAP has managed to get (half way) through a large customer event without causing serious alarms in the minds of customers and partners. Mostly. In our executive meetings, my team have been concentrating mostly upon mobile and the SAP Store since that is something that has exercised many of us as a story we have found difficult and often at odds with the rest of the industry. That is changing but as always, it’s changing the SAP way.

HR: Are You Ready for Mobile Diversity?
More and more mobile devices are showing up at work, whether sanctioned by IT or not. iPhones and iPads, Androids, Blackberries, … today’s workers bring with them the tools with which they are most comfortable in order to get work done. Have you embraced the usage of personal devices in the workplace (a “bring your own device” or “BYOD” policy), or does your company have policies against using non-company sanctioned devices for work related activities? Even if prohibited, you can bet there are employees using their personal technologies (phones, tables, laptops) for at least some information sharing related to work, verbally if not actual data sharing. Similarly, despite any limitations you may have on accessing external social sites while at work, surveys show that employees will find ways to circumvent those policies.

With the uptake in use of mobile devices (smart phones and tablet devices) there is an increasing demand by employees to use their personal devices for work. Managing the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend is a reality that many companies are starting to get to grips with, but even where employees are provided a mobile device to use, there are many challenges to take into consideration. Security of information, of course, is one of these concerns and rightly so, but privacy is also a concern for users. Companies are now facing how to achieve a balance between supporting employee demands for access and the need by companies for appropriate control. Given the fast rate of adoption of smart phones, tablets and the various models involved, all of a sudden complexity in this issue has become a burden for IT departments and a challenge for company executives. In this blog, I wanted to start with the basics and ask some of the questions I have about mobile device management (MDM), and I thought who better to ask than Calvin Anderson. Cal has worked ...
